This structural engineering project, initially developed by WSP, was already constructed when Waterman was brought in to address concerns related to cladding installation. The client raised questions about the potential risks posed by the cladding panels, given the minimal tolerances designed between them. They feared that excessive building movements could compromise the panels.
When my Director presented the problem, I immediately recognized the engineering challenge and envisioned a solution. I proposed developing software capable of analyzing and verifying whether the tolerances were sufficient to accommodate the expected movements. Over a few months, I designed and delivered a comprehensive report generated by the custom software I had conceptualized and developed.
I managed a small internal team consisting of two engineers who were involved from the project's outset. While I focused on software development and analysis, the engineers supported the process by preparing documents and assisting with detailed studies. Their enthusiasm and dedication were instrumental to the project's success.
Guiding the team on how to present technical findings to a non-technical audience was a crucial aspect of this project. The results of the study were clearly communicated, gaining full understanding and acceptance from the client. The contractor also relied on my analysis to validate their proposed solution, further underscoring the impact of our work.
This unique project required significant time investment on my part, but the resource demands for the supporting team were relatively moderate. The company regarded the project as a strategic opportunity to showcase our technical expertise, making it a high-priority endeavor despite the unusual resource allocation.
The reputational benefits were the initial goal, and we successfully achieved them. Our work demonstrated our capability to solve complex structural challenges, enhancing the firm’s credibility and market position.
Being part of this iconic project was deeply rewarding, both professionally and personally. I took pride in envisioning a solution to a complex numerical challenge and executing it successfully. Additionally, the inventive way in which the results were communicated became an integral part of the project's success, further solidifying the client’s confidence in our approach.
