Project: 34 New Bridge Street

Role: Project Lead [RD]

01 – Technical Expertise

This refurbishment project required my involvement from Stages 4 to 5. The primary challenge was validating the existing Stage 3 design, which had been developed by a previous engineering firm. With novation agreements already signed, our team was onboarded under the contractor.

Upon review, we identified deficiencies in the initial design that necessitated changes. Convincing a non-technical client to approve unexpected additional costs proved challenging. It required effective communication and a persuasive approach to ensure the client understood the necessity of the adjustments and their value.

02 – Leadership and Management Skills

The structural team consisted of two graduate engineers and two Revit technicians. Guiding the team to meet the required level of rigor and adhere to strict deadlines was a demanding task.

By the end of the project, one of the graduate engineers was promoted—a testament to the mentorship and support I provided. This individual has since praised my guidance as instrumental to their growth.

03 – Communication and Stakeholder Management

Establishing trust with the client was a gradual process, particularly given the rocky start caused by significant changes in the steel structure.

Through consistent delivery of cost-saving solutions and proactive problem-solving, I was able to demonstrate my expertise and earn the client’s confidence. Frequent site involvement was key to providing timely solutions and avoiding cost escalation, ensuring smoother project progress.

04 – Financial and Commercial Acumen

Despite the challenges, the project was delivered within the anticipated budget. However, obtaining approval for additional costs required due to design changes was a complex task. This necessitated ongoing, careful communication and a strong presence on-site to ensure all adjustments were recognized and accounted for.

05 – Personal Qualities

I took on responsibilities beyond the defined scope of work, particularly in areas related to construction. My proactive involvement in these aspects helped strengthen relationships with the client, ultimately securing their trust and support throughout the project.
