This was a small to medium-sized project where I contributed in my role as a senior engineer. The main challenge stemmed from the basement excavation in a congested area of London, which interfaced with the District Line tunnel.
I played a key role in managing the TFL (Transport for London) asset protection. In collaboration with the WSL Civils team, I contributed to the design, monitoring, and risk mitigation plan for the excavation.
The front of the building cantilevers 1.4 meters at the foundation level. All columns are transferred with this cantilever structure, which was part of the strategy to protect the neighboring tunnel from potential damage.
I successfully managed the engineering challenges across all interfaces, particularly with the client and transport authority.
My collaboration with the architect was seamless, especially considering that the most significant engineering challenges were located underground, where the architect had little influence. Despite this, we understood the project’s requirements and delivered to the client's expectations.
During construction, I introduced changes to the project to mitigate health and safety risks related to the excavation sequence.
Regular reporting and client meetings were essential for communicating project risks to the team and collectively managing them. These efforts helped to ensure that all stakeholders were informed and engaged in the mitigation process.
While I wasn't responsible for the financial performance of the project, I regularly updated my director on progress and resource requirements, ensuring that the project stayed on track and within scope.
This project provided valuable lessons about the complexities of constructing in central London, including stakeholder management, communication, and working with public authorities. These experiences have shaped my approach to managing complex projects in urban environments.
