Project: 211 Old Street

Role: Senior Engineer

01 – Technical Expertise

I was heavily involved in this project from Stage 3 to Construction. It was a large refurbishment scheme which involved the validation of the existing structure and the extension of two floors on top. Several alterations to the existing structure were required to accommodate the new activity.

The two floors were supported on top of a cantilevered steel structure supported by two internal columns. It was a challenge to calculate the lateral torsional buckling of the tapered beams in cantilever.

02 – Leadership and Management Skills

This was one of my first projects in London. The level of exposure was phenomenal from the beginning: Architect, Building Control, and Contractor. I immediately took the challenge and enjoyed taking on responsibilities.

03 – Communication and Stakeholder Management

My English was very poor at the time, and I had to adapt at many different levels. I managed to earn my directors' credibility through my work.

I presented a report on lateral torsional buckling in the cantilevering beams. From that experience and others, I earned the trust of my superiors.

04 – Financial and Commercial Acumen

05 – Personal Qualities

Although I came to the UK with a lot of experience in engineering, there were many cultural gaps that needed to be bridged. I am proud of how quickly I took on responsibilities and adapted to a new environment.
