01 – Technical Expertise

I did not have a design role in this project. Deloitte contracted Waterman to conduct a Category-3 (Cat-3) check, as required by Building Control. Waterman had designed the structure of one of the two linked buildings, and since I was part of that design team, I was the right candidate for this role.

Understanding the drivers behind this design was essential for navigating its complexity. The reliance on a full Finite Element Analysis methodology was pivotal to the design's feasibility. I was able to simplify and justify the Ultimate Limit State (ULS) aspects using straightforward equations, which proved crucial for the assessment and validation of this impressive design.

02 – Leadership and Management Skills

This role spanned at least 2.5 years and involved numerous workshops with the structural engineering team to share insights and address concerns. My approach was collaborative; I aimed to enhance the design—not question its correctness—by suggesting adjustments to minimize risks and reduce reliance on complex site activities.

03 – Communication and Stakeholder Management

Although my role was formally perceived as simply "signing or not signing" documents, the reality was far more intricate. The Cat-3 role placed me in a delicate position between the structural engineer and their client.

Effective communication required more than a formal report; it involved numerous meetings with both the engineer and the client, held both separately and together. This iterative and transparent approach ensured all parties were aligned and comfortable with the outcomes.

05 – Personal Qualities

This project was a tremendous opportunity for professional growth. It allowed me to engage deeply with a unique and technically advanced design while gaining insights into diverse engineering and architectural methodologies. The experience was both rewarding and enriching.
