01 – Technical Expertise

This project progressed from conceptual design through Stages 2 and 3. It presented significant challenges due to site constraints and a critical client requirement: maintaining building operations throughout the construction process.

Architectural coordination with Wilkinson Eyre was smooth and highly collaborative, resulting in innovative solutions that addressed the complexities of a multi-use program within a central London 19-storey development.

A multidisciplinary approach was employed from the early stages, involving M&E engineers, structural engineers, cost consultants, and supply chain specialists to validate the foundation and structural strategy economically.

The foundation design was particularly complex, with constraints imposed by:

02 – Leadership and Management Skills

The structural team consisted of three highly motivated engineers. Their enthusiasm and dedication were evident as they tackled the intricate challenges of the project brief. Constant coordination with the architects allowed for rapid and effective solutions to emerge.

I collaborated closely with my director to develop the construction phase strategy, addressing significant complexities. A key example was the foundation strategy, which required dismantling a piling rig into smaller components for lowering into an underground space 15m below ground level to install over 100 piles.

03 – Communication and Stakeholder Management

The client team led efforts to address the primary challenge: ensuring uninterrupted business operations during construction.

The design team collaborated with various stakeholders to address operational requirements, holding fortnightly meetings with the client’s operations team over two years to fully understand and integrate project needs.

04 – Financial and Commercial Acumen

While the client introduced a number of revisions and changes, their proactive involvement ensured smooth financial management. As a result, financial control did not present significant challenges during the project.

05 – Personal Qualities

This project provided an excellent opportunity to mentor and empower younger engineers. From the outset, I ensured their active involvement in all aspects of the project, including management and decision-making. By expanding meeting participation and encouraging their input, I fostered a collaborative and inclusive environment that contributed to the project’s success.
